Postdoctoral fellowships I can host
Fellowship-funded Postdoctoral Start: Negotiable
Eligibility: A PhD held or near completion in fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, biomechanics or a related area. Each scheme sets its own eligibility window, usually measured from the date of your PhD award.
Every postdoctoral fellowship below requires a host institution and a named supervisor who commits to the application before it can be submitted. I am available to act as host and supervisor for applications in my areas. If you are planning to apply to one of these schemes and need a Cambridge host, write to me.
The schemes
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships — annual call, two-year fellowships, with a strong emphasis on moving between countries.
- Royal Society Newton International Fellowship — for early-career researchers relocating to the UK; requires a UK sponsor.
- Royal Society University Research Fellowship — for those further past the PhD, and correspondingly more competitive.
- Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships — three years, and the host institution must commit to part of the cost, so Cambridge’s internal deadline falls well before the Trust’s.
- EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowships — for UK-eligible applicants working within the EPSRC remit.
Eligibility windows and deadlines change every round, and several schemes have internal University deadlines months ahead of the funder’s own. Confirm the current dates with the funder directly rather than relying on a summary like this one.
What hosting involves on my side
Working through the proposal with you, an honest read on whether the idea is fundable before you spend six months on it, access to the group’s experimental facilities and computing, and the institutional paperwork the scheme requires. What I cannot offer is a guarantee — these are competitive, and a proposal assembled in the fortnight before a deadline does not win.
Timing
Start the conversation about six months before the deadline you are aiming at. That is not a figure of speech: a competitive proposal needs time for the idea to change shape at least once, and Cambridge’s internal approval steps take longer than most people expect.
Write with a CV, a publication list, a page on what you would want to work on, and the name of the scheme you have in mind. The writing strategy differs enough between these that knowing the target changes the advice from the first conversation onwards.
