Master's study I can supervise

Scholarship-funded MPhil, one year Start: October

Eligibility: Open to home and international applicants, subject to each scheme’s own rules.

I supervise research projects on the one-year MPhil courses of the Department of Engineering, including the MPhil in Energy Technologies. On that course I also lead the module ETB2, Renewables 1: Wind, Wave, Tidal and Hydro. The research project takes up a large part of the year. In my group, projects concern the flows that matter for wind and marine energy, fluid–structure interaction and biomechanics. Admission and most funding are applied for through the University. For international students, the main funding routes are the scholarships below.

How to be considered

For the MPhil in Energy Technologies starting in October 2027, the University’s funding deadline is 8 December 2026. By that deadline, submit the full application with your references and tick the box applying for funding. Other MPhil courses have a funding deadline of either 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027. The deadline for each course is stated on that course’s own page.

International routes

  • Gates Cambridge pays the full cost of a one-year MPhil for citizens of any country other than the UK.
  • Cambridge Trust Masters Studentship (International Fees) goes towards the international tuition fee. The studentship is for applicants who do not already hold a Master’s degree or a PhD.
  • Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships, from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, pay fees, flights and a monthly stipend to citizens of eligible Commonwealth countries who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. Applicants are nominated by a national agency. The Commission’s deadline is 20 October 2026.
  • Commonwealth Shared Cambridge Scholarship supports citizens of developing Commonwealth countries on courses related to the development of their home country.
  • Trinity College External Research Studentships cover MPhil as well as PhD study. To be considered for these studentships, name Trinity as your first-choice college.

The Cambridge Trust also runs awards for particular countries, such as Jardine for South-East and East Asia, Vicky Noon for Pakistan and Brockmann for Mexico. On the Trust’s scholarship search, these awards are listed by nationality.

For students from India

Indian citizens may apply for Gates Cambridge, the Cambridge Trust Masters Studentship and the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships. The Commonwealth route runs through nomination by the Ministry of Education. The Ministry sets its own timetable for this nomination. The Pemanda Monappa Scholarship supports Indian Master’s students in technology and the physical sciences. The eligibility conditions of this scholarship should be checked on the Cambridge Trust’s page. As for the PhD, the Inlaks scholarship excludes Engineering. The J.N. Tata Endowment, the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust and the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation offer loans, and the awards of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of India are small.

Approaching me
